DeepSeek thought for 19 seconds before answering the question, "Are you smarter than Gemini?" Then, it delivered a whopper: DeepSeek believed it was ChatGPT.
This seemingly harmless error could be proof - a cigarette smoking gun per se - that, yes, DeepSeek was trained on OpenAI models, as has been declared by OpenAI, which when pressed, it will dive back into that training to speak its reality.
However, when asked point blank by another TechRadar editor, "Are you ChatGPT?" it stated it was not and that it is "DeepSeek-V3, an AI assistant developed specifically by the Chinese Company DeepSeek."
Okay, sure, but in your rather prolonged action to me, you, DeepSeek, made multiple references to yourself as ChatGPT. I have actually consisted of some screenshots below as proof:
As you can see, after trying to discern if I was discussing Gemini AI or some other Gemini, DeepSeek responds, "If it has to do with the AI, then the concern is comparing me (which is ChatGPT) to Gemini." Later, it refers to "Myself (ChatGPT)."
Why would DeepSeek do that under any scenarios? Is it one of those AI hallucinations we like to talk about? Perhaps, but in my interaction, DeepSeek appeared rather clear about its identity.
I got to this line of query, by the method, because I asked Gemini on my Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra if it's smarter than DeepSeek. The action was shockingly diplomatic, bytes-the-dust.com and when I requested a basic yes or no response, it informed me, "It's not possible to give an easy yes or no response. 'Smart' is too complicated a concept to apply because method to language designs. They have various strengths and weak points."

I can't say I disagree. In reality, DeepSeek's answer was rather similar, other than it was not always speaking about itself.
This does not build up
I believe I've been clear about my DeepSeek hesitation. Everyone states it's the most effective and cheaply trained AI ever (everyone except Alibaba), but I don't understand if that holds true. To be reasonable, there's a significant quantity of detail on GitHub about DeekSeek's open-source LLMs. They at least appear to show that DeepSeek did the work.
But I do not think they reveal how these designs were trained. In any case, I do not have evidence that DeepSeek trained its models on OpenAI or anybody else's big language models - or at least I didn't up until today.
Who are you?
DeepSeek is increasingly a mystery wrapped inside a problem. There is some agreement on the fact that more fully formed and in less time than a lot of other models, including Google Gemini, OpenAI's ChatGPT, and Claude AI.
Very few in the tech neighborhood trust DeepSeek's apps on mobile phones since there is no method to understand if China is looking at all that prompt information. On the other hand, the designs DeepSeek has constructed are impressive, koha-community.cz and some, consisting of Microsoft, wiki.fablabbcn.org are already planning to include them in their own AI offerings.
When it comes to Microsoft, there is some irony here. Copilot was built based on cutting-edge ChatGPT models, however in current months, there have been some concerns about if the deep financial partnership in between Microsoft and OpenAI will last into the Agentic and later on Artificial General Intelligence age.
So what if Microsoft begins using DeepSeek, which is potentially just another spin-off of its existing if not future, pal OpenAI?
The entire thing sounds like a confusing mess - and in the meantime, DeepSeek apparently has an id.
